Summer is the perfect time to enjoy everything the season has to offer—family cookouts, concerts, vacations, sporting events, festivals, and afternoons at the park. But with longer days and rising temperatures comes an important reminder: your health and safety should always come first.

July is recognized as UV Safety Awareness Month, a time to learn how to protect yourself and your loved ones from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays and extreme summer heat.

At 107.5 JAMZ, we want you to make memories this summer—not unnecessary trips to the emergency room.

Protect Your Skin

The sun produces ultraviolet (UV) rays that can damage your skin even on cloudy days. Too much exposure increases the risk of sunburn, premature skin aging, eye damage, and skin cancer.

The good news is that protecting yourself doesn't take much effort.

Before heading outdoors:

  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours—or more often if you're swimming or sweating.

  • Wear sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays.

  • Choose lightweight clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and seek shade whenever possible.

Remember, people of every skin tone can experience sun damage. Protecting your skin is an important part of staying healthy.

Don't Forget to Hydrate

High temperatures can quickly lead to dehydration, especially if you're spending time outside.

Watch for signs such as:

  • Thirst

  • Headaches

  • Dizziness

  • Fatigue

  • Muscle cramps

Carry a reusable water bottle and drink water throughout the day—even before you feel thirsty.

Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illness

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can develop quickly, particularly during outdoor activities.

If you or someone around you experiences:

  • confusion

  • fainting

  • rapid heartbeat

  • nausea

  • a high body temperature

move to a cooler place immediately, begin cooling the person down, and seek medical attention if symptoms are severe.

Keep Children and Pets Safe

Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle—not even for a few minutes.

Temperatures inside a car can rise dramatically in a short amount of time, creating life-threatening conditions even when it doesn't feel extremely hot outside.

Enjoy Summer Responsibly

Whether you're attending a family reunion, grilling with neighbors, traveling, or enjoying live music, a little preparation can make all the difference.

This month, remember to:

  • Pack sunscreen.

  • Bring plenty of water.

  • Wear sunglasses.

  • Take breaks in the shade.

  • Check on older adults, young children, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat.
